Everything about us is wired for growth. In children, the growth is obvious, natural and exponential! And, it’s fun to watch! For adults it appears far less obvious and natural. Exponential seems almost unnatural.
Up and to the right! “Wouldn’t that be nice.” Instant gratification, no obstacles, like a rocket. That’s not really how growth happens and honestly, what would be the fun in that?
Growth is a process and a journey and there are three (yup just three) components to creating the growth you want in your business, life or career. Decide what you want, disrupt your current habits, and be relentless in the pursuit of achieving it.
DECIDE: What is it you really want? Most people know what they want, they just don’t make the decision to after it. My clients tell me what they want and then, as if on auto pilot, they tell me all the circumstances and reasons why that wouldn’t be possible... for them. So called logic, reason, circumstances – dream crushers every time. Stop that! Give your desires some space and time. Get clear, get a picture. Decide what you want and go for it.
DISRUPT: The person with your goal achieved thinks and behaves differently from you. That’s why they have what you want. Start thinking and acting like the person with your goal achieved. That’s going to feel uncomfortable. Whitney Johnson describes personal disruption as "the stepping down, back, or sideways to grow". A baby can’t crawl fast enough to walk… they have to give up crawling. It’s not easy. It’s a journey filled with lots of literal bumps and bruises but eventually they walk. They walk because they’ve decided that’s what’s next and they were willing to give up the tried and true method for getting around. So go ahead, disrupt yourself!
BE RELENTLESS IN THE PURSUIT: Price Pritchett says it best, “Most people confuse wishing and wanting with pursuing. Their desire for a dream may be desperate and deep. But when that desire fails to produce, they conclude the dream cannot be theirs. Actually, the only proof they have is that the longing is not enough.” Roadblocks on the journey are nothing more than interesting learning opportunities – and overcoming them make the best stories! Remember, the only failure is in the stopping.
