“In the absence of clearly defined goals we become strangely loyal to performing daily trivia until ultimately we become enslaved by it.” ~ Robert A. Heinlein
He’s so right. I think we can all look to times in our lives when we’ve been most excited. Not surprising, those exciting times are almost always linked to goals, to passion, a purpose, a burning desire. Fire in the belly! Nothing will stand in our way. We wake up excited because we are on purpose to the achievement of our goals.
430 days (and counting) of some form of pandemic lockdown. It’s no wonder life can some days feel like an enslavement of sameness and daily trivia. No belly fire, no desire, no purpose or passion… what goal?
Dr. Darcie Dixon, my favourite behavioural scientist, just wrote about this phenomenon in her latest Sassonomics blog. We’ve been cut off from our connections. We’re isolated and unable to contribute and participate in our communities. Our sense of self-concept is confused at best and at risk of getting lost.
But there’s hope. And that hope is found in purpose. Purpose, passion, fire in the belly. A GOAL! Yes, even in Covid you can have goals. Big juicy goals for your business, your career, your life. You can have goals that you don’t know how to achieve – those are really the best kind to have. They cause growth. They pull on something inside of you, you didn’t even know you had. So start dreaming again. Set a goal. Give your business or career a purpose. Give yourself purpose. Your inner greatness is waiting for your return.
