Get Up To Something!

Libby McCready • May 4, 2021

This is Jordan. Jordan is 6 and he is an astronaut. For his birthday he received a handwritten note from Chris Hadfield that said, “Aim HIGH! The sky is NOT the limit! Pursue your dreams, Jordan”. (thank you @ChrisHadfield for being the best Canadian ever!)

Jordan is up to some very important stuff that is holding his attention – he has a dream! He has no time to languish…

The word ‘languish’ has been making the rounds on social media thanks to a recent New York Times article on the subject. I can’t tell you the number of conversations I’ve had with clients, friends and colleagues who have been thrilled to have this word describe their feelings of blah, and low energy. The mental health experts tell us it’s very important to have words to describe our feelings and this particular word seems to be resonating with a lot of people. It resonated with me.

But back to the experts. They say the labeling of, or putting a name to an emotion can help a person feel less isolated or alone… a labeled emotion becomes somehow objective and less personal. But they also say that the true purpose of labeling is to enable the person to ‘untangle’, ‘unstick’, move on, or begin a healing process – to move on from that emotional state.

Experts warn that for some, labeling can have the opposite effect – people start to identify as the label and embrace it more fully. That’s my concern about the growing ‘popularity’ of languishing. I hear people talk about it like their warm, cozy and comforting blanket that has been found and is ready to be curled up with for a bit.

Languish: a lack of vitality, low energy, an aimless wandering... blah. Thoughts have power. Thoughts create what comes next in your day, week, month… life.

Untangle. And how do you do that? With a goal – a clearly defined picture of what you really want. Label that! What comes next in your day, week, month… life will be dramatically better.

Be like Jordan – decide what you really want, and have that hold your thoughts and attention. Watch yourself get up to some very important stuff!

By Libby McCready March 7, 2023
Throughout his career, Alim Somji has encountered stares, questions, and confusion with respect to his facial difference. This discomfort —driven, in his mind, by a lack of awareness —created challenges in building relationships and establishing trust quickly. Alim believes there’ much work to be done to create awareness and understanding in the workplace. Recent AboutFace research revealed that about 3 in 5 people with a facial difference reported being negatively impacted at work or within the context of work due to their facial difference. This needs to change. Join us, as we discuss expanding the DE&I conversation for healthier workplace cultures and to learn more about the work of AboutFace, who's vision is the elimination of the stigma and discrimination encountered by individuals with a facial difference.
